Mega Community Garage Sale : 4th July 2015



On Saturday 4th July, Julie and I held a Mega Community Garage Sale at my home.

With the help of Maureen, Michael, Di, Gerry and Jessie on the day, it was a huge success and we raised $2,500 for NAFA’s Earthquake Appeal. 

 

Over 50 friends & family and other supporters of Nepal donated a wide variety of goods to sell.  It was a mad shopping frenzy with many people coming back up to 5 times during the sale to buy more! 

We are hoping this may become an annual event on the NAFA Calendar with all proceeds supporting schools in remote villages of Nepal.

 

 

 

Eat Cake for A Cause : 30th October 2014

My fellow co-workers and I are baking cakes and other goodies to sell to our other co-workers to raise money for NAFA... www.nafa.org.au

We call it "Eat Cake for a Cause" and it happens every second Monday at Back Track Adventures.

So far Kelly, Kaz and I have made Ginger Cake, Blueberry & Ricotta Muffins, Chocolate Brownies and Savoury Muffins ... YUM!!

To date we have raised $67 ... :) ... go team!!

Brisbane Marathon Festival : 3rd August 2014

I DID IT ... I finished the Brisbane Half Marathon in a time of 2hrs 21mins 42 secs ... Yippee :) ... AND I reached my fundraising target by raising over $3,000, which I was even more happy about! 

To all my friends & family who supported the cause leading up to the day and on the day ... it was a huge motivation for me ... THANK YOU :)

My two favourite experiences on the day?

Crossing the finish line and seeing all the supporters there for everyone competing on the day.

Holding up the Nepali flag together as a Team ... it hit me then what a huge success the day was for NAFA and that great things are possible when a group of passionate people get together to do something good ... this was definitely a warm fuzzy moment for me!

The "Everest Mob", our amazing Team of runners & walkers, collectively raised over $13,000 for NAFA supported Health Projects in Nepal.

These funds will go towards the following important projects -

• Primary hearing care and treatment services provided by Hearing Nepal Program and the Nepal Association of Hard of Hearing (NAHOH)
• Tilganga Eye Hospital remote cataract surgery eye clinics 
• Salary subsidy of 3 health clinic workers (including two midwifes) for a remote area health clinic in the hilly region of Nepal 
• Sponsorship of health related further education and training students e.g. nursing, rural health, nursing assistant

Brisbane Half Marathon for Health Projects in Nepal

I'm at it again with another (my third) physical challenge for NAFA (Nepal Australia Friendship Association).  

This time I'm participating in the Brisbane Half Marathon on the 3rd August 2014 ... it's ONLY 21.1kms ^o^ but will be tough for me as the body is a bit older and not as fast :) ... But I love a physical challenge, especially when it's for the people of Nepal!  

2014 is NAFA's 25th Anniversary Year and there is a small team of us (made up of Nepali and non-Nepali) who are collectively trying to raise $25,000 to commemorate this major milestone.  The money raised will go towards important health projects.  My fundraising page has more details of the projects and also on NAFA's website ... www.nafa.org.au

I'm taking part in the Brisbane Marathon Festival 2014

Nepal Australia Friendship Association Inc (NAFA)

On Sunday 3rd August, I will be doing my darndest to run a gruelling 21km course and I will be making my run count!  

Not only am I a proud supporter of NAFA and Nepal, but I also have a great passion for trekking in the magnificent Himalaya.  I have visited Nepal 9 times since November 2000, and I never lose my enthusiasm for this beautiful country with its wonderful diverse culture and gentle happy people.  But Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world with the majority of the population living in extreme poverty with little or no access to affordable health care, quality education and water.  I am continually inspired by the dedicated people who are NAFA, but also by the Nepali people and their humble & grateful attitude to life; even when most of them face immense hardship and struggle in their everyday lives without the basic needs we take for granted.  Until I spent time in Nepal, did I realise how fortunate we are in Australia and how unaware I was of the plight of residents in developing countries.  This awareness, my love of this wonderful country and the friendships I have made with Nepali people in Australia and Nepal, motivates me to be involved and to try to make a difference when and where I can.  This is why I'd greatly appreciate any support, big or small, that you may be able to extend to this very worthy and important cause!

Nestled in the majestic Himalayas, Nepal is a beautiful country but despite its beauty and uniqueness it is also very poor. Health care especially in the rural areas of Nepal is of very poor quality and/or not easily accessible. Furthermore availability of health care workers and resources is very limited. Providing health services to families, especially women and children, is one very important facet of NAFA's support to remote areas of Nepal.  This fun run will allow our team to raise funds, which can be put towards some very important on-going health projects currently supported by NAFA.

For very little cost health workers can save lives and prevent illnesses that can be deadly in under-resourced developing countries like Nepal.

Shree Mahakali School : 13 May 2012

Today we hiked (3 hrs from Nagarkot) to Shree Mahakali School, in the Kavre District.
Last year NAFA and Sunsuper funded the building of two classrooms through the Sunsuper Dreams $5000 grant.  I hadn't visited since November last year so it was great to see the Principal, teachers and students again.  The classrooms are still not quite finished ... handrails and desks and benches are needed ... the Principal was hopeful that this would happen very soon.

Shree Mahakali School : Feb 2012

In February 2012, Ross Hazelwood, Secretary of NAFA, attended the official opening of the classrooms at Shree Mahakali School.  The classrooms were not quite finished but the opening had to be held as Ross was returning to Australia at the end of February.  A local Government member also attended the opening.
